Art - Year 1 - Learning about Colour - Lesson 4: Hot and Cold Circles

Resources you will need

  • Colouring tools (pencils, crayons, felt pens, pastels or if you have paints even better)
  • Colour wheel you made or the ‘Hot and cold colours’ PowerPoint from lesson 1
  • Paper and an adult to divide it into six equal sections (Adults: You can fold one piece of paper or cut out six equal squares and join them together when finished-see pictures below)

Introduction

Today you will create an artwork inspired by the famous painting above, ‘Squares with Concentric Circles’ by an artist called Kandinsky.  Watch the PowerPoint all about him and his art and answer the questions at the end about the painting.

Activity

First, draw a small circle in the middle of each square section.

Then around each circle, draw another slightly larger circle and repeat doing this until you would like to stop.

Now colour half of the circles with hot colours and half using cold colours. There are examples below.

TIPS:

  • Use your colour wheel to check the hot and cold colours you need to collect.
  • If you have different shade pencils or pens use them-light and dark, bright and dull. If you are using paint or pastels you could even mix different shades yourself.
  • Notice how Kandinsky’s circles and rings are all different sizes, widths and look wonky! This means if you draw freehand like him, all our pictures will be unique.
  • You might like to use different things together like crayons and pencils.

To end

Which half of your picture do you prefer and why?

Parents and carers: If your child enjoyed creating their picture in this way, they might like to make a Kandinsky card using hearts and post it to someone special during this time.

Art - Year 1 - Learning about Colour - Lesson 5: Hot Hand

Please supervise children when using web links

Resources you will need

  • Colouring tools (pencils, felt pens or crayons)
  • Paper
  • Your colour wheel or the ‘Hot and Cold Colour’ PowerPoint from lesson 1
  • Your hand!

Introduction

Today you will create a picture to learn about the way artists sometimes use hot and cold colours.

Look at the painting below, ‘A View of Het Steen in the Early Morning’ (1636) by Rubens. Do you notice where the hot and cold colours are? That is right the hotter colours are at the bottom and the colder colours at the top. Artists often put hotter colours at the bottom to make this part look like it is near to us and colder colours in the middle or top to make these parts seem far away.

If you would like a closer look at the painting, open The National Gallery link…

https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/peter-paul-rubens-a-view-of-het-steen-in-the-early-morning

Activity

First, draw around your hand.

Next, think about the patterns and shapes you like, maybe zig zags, stripes, flowers, symbols or logos of favourite things, anything! Now draw your pattern onto the whole of your page.

Then, use hot colours to colour the inside of the hand shape and cold colours around the outside. Here are some examples.

To end

Does your ‘hot hand’ look like it is popping out of the picture? Artists often use hot colours to make things stand out. Can you think of other shapes you could use if you repeated this activity again? Maybe your name or initials in hot colours would look effective.

Finally, take this Tate Kids Quiz to find out what kind of colour you would be...

https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/games-quizzes/quiz-what-kind-colour-are-you

Well done, you have learnt lots about colours over the past half term. We would love to see your unique artworks from the past five weeks, please send them in.

Go to your ‘ToDo’s’

There a several challenges within 'fun with fish'.  Using the command buttons displayed on the screen, you need to create an instruction (algorithm) to complete the challenges.  For example, some of the tasks involve making the fish go in different directions (left and right).  It also introduces the basic principles of fixing (debugging) a program when it does not work.  The challenges get progressively harder as you go along and builds on the skills the children have been practicing.  There are video instructions to help you when you enter each task.

History/Geography/RERE Unit-  Holy books

Introduction/Discussion:

Today we will be looking at why the Bible is special to Christians?

Bible is the name of the Christian holy book. Christians believe that the Bible is the book God has given people, so it is loved and respected.

Holy books often have great stories in them – they are not just story books, but lots more as well.

To learn about why the Bible is important to Christians have a look at the accompanying powerpoint- ‘Bible  Powerpoint’ and watch this video https://request.org.uk/restart/2015/01/21/the-bible-3/

Some questions to consider.

  • How should a special book be treated.
  • How do you keep it safe?
  • Should you do what it says?

Task:

Write down 3 things you have learned today.

Write down a question you still have.

Art - Week 1: Complementary Colours

Resources you will need

  • a white piece of paper
  • something to colour with (pens, pencils or crayons)

Introduction

Can you find the colours opposite each other on the colour wheel?

These are called complementary colours. This is because they help each other look brighter when they are side-by-side.

Activity

You are going to create a picture using complementary colours.

  1. First, find a simple shaped object in your home such as a piece of fruit
    or a toy.
  2. Then draw the shape of your object.
  3. Next, choose a colour from the colour wheel to colour it in.

What colour did you colour it in?

Can you find its complementary colour?

  1. Finally, colour in the background with its complementary colour.

Further ideas

  • You can repeat your drawing using the different complementary colours, like the pears below
  • If you have light and dark shades of your colours, use them to add detail, like the leaves below or add a pattern to your background
  • If you have drawing tools on a home computer or tablet, you could create your picture using digital media

History - Year 1 Topic: ‘What was life like for our grandparents?’

Comparing old toys and toys you play with today

Last history session you read the story ‘The Old Toy Room’ and hopefully you noticed that some of the toys that Lottie found in granny’s house can be found in your toy boxes today.  However, some of the toys you have today, definitely couldn’t be found in the past.

Your task is to have a look at the different toys on the sheet and sort them into toys that you could play with today and those that you could play with in the past. Some however, you could play with today and in the past like a doll or a ball.

Then look at all the toys on the sheet write a sentence to explain which one would you like to play with the most and why.
