Art Lesson 2: Making Marks

Resources

  • Pencil
  • Paper (two pieces)
  • Fabric Resource Sheet

Last week you explored different lines, today you will use different lines and different patterns.

Warm Up

Fill a piece of paper with as many different patterns and lines you can think of. There are some examples at the top and look around the room to spot others.

Main Activity

First, take a piece of paper and fold it to make six sections.  Get a grown up to help you if you find it tricky.  You are going to fill each section with a different pattern inspired by fabric designs.

Next, look at the ‘fabric design’ resource sheet.  Take time to notice the different shapes, lines and patterns you see.  Talk about them and describe them to others.

Now, using these draw patterns of your own.  Create a different pattern in each of your six sections.  Remember you are creating your own so take parts you like from the patterns you see.

Finally, once you have finished, which of your patterns do you like best and why?

If you were designing fabric for an item of clothing which design would you choose?

To end

Some of the designs included on the fabric resource sheet are traditional African patterns.  To find out about African designs read the PowerPoint PresentationHere you will also find additional activities should you wish to complete more.

Keep your work as you will need it for next week’s lesson.

RE Year 2 – Task 3

RE Unit – How are we the same and different from other people and does it matter?

Introduction/ Questions to consider:

  • I can answer the questions about the Baha’i faith
  • I can say that Baha’is believe that all people are equal

In the last session you learnt about the Bahá’í Faith.

Just to recap, Bahá’ís are followers of Baha’u’llah.  Bahai’s believe there is only one God.  That everyone is equal and we are global citizens and that all citizens of the world are responsible for one another.

Think about the term “unity”.  Where else have you heard this word?

What is the difference between unity and uniformity.  Can you think of any examples?

If you had a bunch of flowers all the same, and another bunch of varied flowers.  Which is more beautiful, and why?

Is diversity important?

Task:

Read the information sheet and answer the  questions.

Art - Year 2- Lesson 6: My Window

Resources:

  • paper
  • pencil
  • colouring tools

Today we will use these artworks by David Hockney, who is displayed in Tate Modern, to inspire our work. Many artists are inspired by what they can see out of their window and Hockey completed many paintings and drawings of what he could see from different windows in different places.

Activity

Look out of a window at home, or in class, and draw the view.  Decide if you are going to draw the window frame as well, like Hockey.  It’s up to you.

NOTE:  If you are in a classroom with frosted windows, either;

  • Think of the view from a window at home and try to remember and draw as much as you can.  When you arrive home, look at the view - what did you remember and what did you miss; or
  • Imagine you are somewhere (jungle, Arctic, city) and draw what you think you might see.

To End

  • You could redraw the same view during a different time of the day or in different weather conditions.  Notice how the things you draw change.
  • If you have a printer, here are some colouring pages of Hockney landscapes.  Will you copy his colours or choose your own?

RE Year 2 – Task 4:  RE Unit - How are we the same and different from other people and does it matter?

Introduction:

The Bahá'í Faith places great importance on the relationship with God, but not on religious ritual.  Bahá'ís have no priesthood or clergy, no initiation ceremonies, no sacraments, and no worship rituals.

They believe there are lots of ways to help the world to be a better place and that this helping can be a religious act.

Bahá'ís believe that spiritual life goes hand in hand with the practical life.  They see social and economic development projects as an expression of faith in action.

Can you remember the different charities we have supported at Vaughan. (Red Nose Day, NSPCC, Pudsey Bear, Macmillian).

How do we help?

There are lots of ways to do charity.

Some questions to consider:

  • Can you think of a charity?  What is charity?
  • Who should we help?
  • Should we give money and that’s it, not do anything else?  Why?  Why not?

Task:

Research a charity and then create a poster/leaflet to share what you found out  about the charity. Examples of charities in the UK -Oxfam / NSPCC / WWF / RSPCA / RNLI.

Art - Lesson 7:  Take a Line for a Curvy and Straight Walk

Resources:

  • Two pieces of paper
  • Pencil
  • Colouring tools

Today we will use very different lines to create two contrasting pieces of art.  One will only use straight lines and the other only curvy.  Compare these two artworks by David Hockney and Piet Mondrian, notice how the lines different.

Activity

Artwork 1 - Curvy Line

Place your pencil somewhere on your paper.  Now move it around your paper using curvy lines and do not lift your pencil from the paper until you have finished.  You could say you are taking your pencil for a curvy, wavy walk all over your paper.  Then, fill in the sections using different colours.

Artwork 2 - Straight Line

Before you begin, decide if you would like to use a ruler or challenge yourself to try to draw lines as straight as you can without one.  When ready, draw straight lines from one side of your paper to the other - draw a mixture of vertical, horizontal, close together and further apart.

Now use only blue, red and yellow to colour some of the squares or rectangles in your artwork.

To End

  • Challenge yourself to combine these two ways of drawing on one piece of paper.
  • You can also access colouring pages of artists to use a mixture of different lines here.
