October 2020 Newsletter

Message from Mrs Jones

Welcome to the Autumn term and our first newsletter of this new academic year.

I hope all our families are keeping well and safe.

Thank you for helping us to ensure that Vaughan is a Covid-safe environment for all children, parents and staff by adhering to our staggered start and finish times, and keeping your distance from other adults while on site who are not in your household bubble.

Please remember your child's coat every day as the weather is now starting to get colder.  Please make sure that everything your child brings to school is clearly labelled with their name so that we can return items to them if they lose them!  We already have a number of items in lost property and we are only a few weeks into the start of the term.  Please see a list of lost property items further down in the newsletter.

Please also remember that we are a healthy school, so if you are giving your child a packed lunch, please pack a lunch that is healthy - no fizzy drinks or sweets, and a balanced lunch with fruit, carbohydrates, protein etc. so that your child has good energy levels for the day.

Don't forget the Time for Change Project which started running yesterday.  A letter was emailed to parents yesterday about this so please take a look at that for more details.  Linked to this project we also have our annual 'Show Racism the Red Card Day' on Friday 16th October where children can wear non-uniform (something red if possible!) and make a donation via our schoolmoney website.

Continue to keep safe and take care of yourselves and your families.

A BIG THANK YOU

This week, we were delighted to receive a set of three books on the theme of mediation for school aged children.  Jaya and Laila’s grandfather had been nominated as National Civil/Commercial Mediator of the Year and the sponsor of the awards offered a set of three books to their nominated school.  We are very grateful recipients and know that our Learning Mentors will make great use of these when working with children in our school community.

Many thanks to the Carrick family for thinking of us and we are very proud of their grandfathers achievement.

WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

Taking place week commencing  Monday 5 October 2020

This year's Walk to School Week is focused on celebrating the incredible physical and mental health benefits walking brings to every individual.

Strong hearts, healthy bones and increased muscle strength are all well-documented outcomes of walking, but the benefits for the mind are just as powerful - increased sense of calm and self-esteem, time to connect with friends, family and the natural world, awakened creativity and improved overall cognitive function.  Phew!  All that makes for a happy, healthy child set up for success in and out of the classroom!

Competition time!

Poets get ready...we would like you to write a piece of poetry based on your walk to school and the health benefits it brings!  The best poems will be displayed proudly on the School Travel Notices board for all to see.  Please send entries to: travel@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk.

Good luck!

LOST PROPERTY

We are only a few weeks into the start of this term and we already have a number of items in our lost property that do not have names on them and so we are unable to return them to the correct child!

We currently have:

- 2 water bottles

- 4 coats

- 4 school jumpers

- 1 school cardigan

There will be an opportunity at the end of this half term (on Thursday 22nd October), for parents to look through our lost property which will be laid out on a table in front of the school building between 3.00 pm and 3.30 pm.

Please ensure all items brought to school are clearly named with your child's name and class.

Thank you!

SCHOOL LUNCHES

If your child is absent from school and you wish to cancel a pre-booked meal on Schoolmoney/Eduspot you can do this in advance by logging into Schoolmoney/Eduspot via the website or the app on your phone before 12 midnight the day before.

Alternatively in the event your child is ill first thing in the morning you must email the school on the first day of absence before 9.00 am to attendance@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk  stating the reason for the absence and requesting for a refund for their school lunch.

All orders are sent to the kitchen and the food is prepared, therefore this charge will remain billable to parents, unless the request is received in writing before 9.00 am on the first day of absence.

KEY MESSAGES FROM WELFARE

Medical Conditions and Health Care Plans

If your child has a diagnosed medical condition, a Health Care Plan needs to be completed (if we have not got one already). It is important that the school are aware of any medical conditions.

If there are any changes to a child’s existing medical condition and/or a new medical condition emerges, parents/carers need to complete a new Health Care Plan.

If we do not receive a new or updated Health Care Plan, your child will be unable to attend school.  If we do not receive medicine (as outlined in your child’s Health Care Plan), your child will be unable to attend school.

The Health Care Plans are available on the school website here.

Epi pens

If your child uses an epi-pen at school, please can you provide three epi-pens so that we can keep one in the lunch hall, classroom and welfare.

Inhalers

Please ensure that inhalers are kept in their original packaging with the child’s name and instructions.  We also require an age appropriate spacer together with the inhaler.

Inhalers for children in the Junior School

If your child uses an inhaler, please can you provide a third inhaler so that we have a spare one available.

Medication

If your child is prescribed medication which has to be administered at school, please complete a consent form which can be found on the school website with clear instructions.  It must come via the school office or alternatively, call Welfare tel: 0208 427 7222 Ext 2 and arrangements can be made to collect from outside the school office.

Any medical queries, please contact Mrs O’Rourke or Ms Goodspeed in Welfare.

Medical appointments during the day

And lastly a reminder about medical appointment.  If your child has a medical appointment during the school day, please remember to email attendance@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk with the details and with proof of the appointment.  Thank you.

THE CARER CARD

Who is a Carer?

A Carer is anyone of any age who provides unpaid support to a family member, neighbour or friend who may not be able to manage without their support

What is the Carer Card?

The idea for a Carer Card came from carers in Harrow.  The aim of the Carer Card is for Carers to be recognised and supported in their caring capacity by the local community. Community organisations continue to work on the development of the Carer Card for Harrow.

The Carer Card can help you in the following ways:

Recognition: confirming status as a carer who is providing invaluable support to a vulnerable person

Contingency: confirmation of who to contact in the event of an emergency

Discounts: for the carer from local businesses as a thank you for all that you do

WHAT IS PUPIL PREMIUM?

The pupil premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.

At Vaughan Primary School, we are determined to support every child on their journey to success.  Vaughan Primary School has always had a strong ethos in developing the whole child within education and life and we are committed to ensuring each child receives Pupil Premium money benefits from the funding, regardless of their ability.  Given the right learning environment we believe all pupils can flourish and reach their full potential.

How Is Pupil Premium Money Spent At Vaughan?

Please see the school website for details on how we have spent the money.  We will not necessarily spend the money on the same things every year; we will see how well different interventions work and if it is appropriate for the current pupils.

To apply for pupil premium and free school meals, you can apply directly at: https://pps.lgfl.org.uk/.  Or you can contact the school office who will be pleased to check on your behalf.  You will need to provide your full name, date of birth and National Insurance number for the check to be carried out.

HARROW FOODBANK

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy, receiving an unexpected bill on a low income, changes to benefits, not being eligible for benefits (for example due to immigration status) or delayed wages.  A simple box of food makes a big difference and the Harrow Foodbank can provide families with three days of nutritionally balanced food and support.

The Harrow Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Their belief is that they don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry.

Vaughan Primary School understands that at such times, some families may need emergency support or aid, therefore we are an agreed voucher referral partner and we are able to support families and provide them with emergency support.  Please contact Ms Keohane, Mrs Fink or Ms Perschky if you require the support of the school or the Foodbank.  We have assisted many parents to access this support and they have found the foodbank very supportive.  Please be reassured that there will be complete confidentiality in this matter.

What happens at a foodbank?

Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

What is in a typical food parcel?

Food parcels can include:  Breakfast cereals, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, tinned beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, tea or coffee, sugar, biscuits and snacks.

Dietary requirements

The Foodbank can usually adapt your food parcel to meet your dietary needs, for example, gluten free, halal or vegetarian. When you arrive at the foodbank centre, a volunteer will chat to you about any special dietary requirements you may have.

The popular holiday club run by Stomp is taking place this half term at Vaughan Primary School.  See flyer below for more details and for information on how to book.

PERFORM DRAMA SCHOOL

Perform is a different type of drama school.  We use a unique mix of the performing arts - drama, dance and singing - to bring out every child's potential in a safe and secure environment.

They'll focus on your child's enthusiasm and engagement in the activities.  And they'll be with your child every step of the way to guide, inspire and encourage.

As well as having fun at Perform, your child will enjoy real benefits: greater confidence, improved concentration and an increased awareness of what they can achieve.

All children are entitled to a no obligation introductory free class which can be booked at this link - https://www.perform.org.uk/free-drama-class.  You can also watch a video about our safety measures at perform.org.uk/covidsafety.  If you would like to sign up after the free trial session, you will receive a £40 discount.
