December 2020 Newsletter

Message from Mrs Jones

Dear Parents

We have come to the end of a very ‘interesting’ Autumn term!

On behalf of myself and all the staff at Vaughan I would like to thank you for all your support this term, particularly in such difficult times with class and Year Group closures.  The engagement of the pupils in school and at home has been amazing and, as usual, your children are a credit to you.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mrs Tobin, our Deputy Head, who returns to teaching in January.  She has been a well-respected and loved member of staff over 20 years and will be dearly missed.

We also say goodbye to Miss Ferguson who is leaving to take up a teaching position in an other borough.  We thank her for all her hard work and commitment to the children at Vaughan.

We wish them both well and every success for the future.

Please remember the following after the last day of term:

Where a student tests positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) after being in school on Thursday 17th December and Friday 18th December, parents will need to contact the school via email at: office@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk.   School staff will only be available for the first 6 days after the end of term from Saturday 19th December until Wednesday 23rd December 2020, for parents to report any positive result so that we can report to the appropriate authorities and inform the school community.   When contacting the school it is important in your email to include the following:

  • Child’s name
  • Child’s class
  • When the child started showing symptoms
  • When the test was taken
  • When the result was received.

Parents should follow contact tracing instructions provided by NHS Test and Trace in accordance to self-isolation.

From Thursday 24th December parents are not to contact the school as all positive cases should be dealt with through NHS Test and Trace.   We look forward to welcoming all pupils back on Tuesday 5th January 2021.

I would personally like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Stay safe

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Yours sincerely

MRS KAREN JONES
Headteacher

YEAR 5 DIVERSITY POSTER COMPETITION WINNERS

Following a successful competition in Year 5 run by our Diversity Team, I am pleased to announce the winners of the poster competition.  The Black Barrister’s Network were in school to provide a workshop for Year 6 pupils on careers in law and kindly judged the entries.

The winners are:

David 5A

Kaiya 5C

The photos below showcase the wonderful entries from Year 5.  We hope to roll out the Diversity Team’s work across the school in the New Year and present a more polished virtual gallery of these posters.  I would like to thank the Diversity Team for all their commitment to introducing their ‘Time for Change’ project into the school.

POPPY APPEAL 2020

This year we still managed to support the Poppy appeal and as a community we did an amazing job for this worthy cause.  We raised a fantastic £381.30!!

A huge thank you to parents who supported us with the appeal, we appreciate this particularly during these difficult times.  We look forward to seeing how much we can raise next year.

CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY 2020

This year we held our Christmas Jumper Day on Wednesday 16th December.  The date was changed due to the large number of year group absences.

It was a non-uniform day, so children could wear something Christmassy – e.g. a Christmas Jumper, hat, tinsel, or anything red, white or green!

If children were self-isolating on the day, they could still get involved and send a photo of themselves to their class email address, dressed in something Christmassy!

A minimum donation of £1.00 could be made via Schoolmoney which was donated to ‘Save the Children’.  We raised £379 so far.  Thank you to everyone who donated and joined in with the fun!

FRIENDS OF VAUGHAN UPDATE

We have almost made it to the Christmas break after a very challenging term! Thank you for all your amazing support over the last few months, despite no Christmas Fair this year we have still managed to raise lots of money to support our wonderful school.

WHAT'S NEW?

MINI CHRISTMAS TREES

We still have several Christmas Tree Saplings available to buy for £5 from PTA-Events.

They would make a perfect gift or be grown at home and decorated year after year!  One lucky person will also WIN a family ticket to see The Night Before Christmas worth £42 at Harrow Arts Centre!

RAISE MONEY WHILE YOU SHOP!

You can support Friends of Vaughan without spending a penny extra by shopping through easyfundraising & Amazon Smile.

PLAY EQUIPMENT

The joint project between Public Health Harrow, Vaughan School and The Friends of Vaughan to deliver the playground improvement project is well underway. Installation completion is expected on 17th December.  We expect to be able to formally open the new play equipment early in the new year following an independent health & safety inspection.

BIG PTA RAFFLE

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets – you helped raise over £300.  We are keeping everything crossed for a Vaughan winner in the draws taking place over the next few weeks!

KEY MESSAGES FROM WELFARE

HARROW FLU Immunisation Catch-Up Clinic

The Immunisation Team can now offer an alternative flu vaccination to the nasal spray which contains Porceine Gelatin.  The alternative vaccine is an inactivated vaccination which is an injection rather than a nasal spray so will be given in the upper arm.

If you refused the nasal flu vaccination because it contained Porceine Gelatin but wish your child to be vaccinated against the flu please contact one of these numbers to make an appointment.  Please call this number if your child was self-isolating when the Flu Immunisations were being carried out in school:

07557 158102 or 0208 102 6333

Appointments are available on Saturday 12th December 2020:  9.30am – 3.30pm and Monday 21st December 2020:  9.30am – 12.30pm

Alexandra Avenue Clinic, 275 Alexandra Avenue, Harrow, HA2 9DX

Or they can arrange an after school appointment between 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Medical Conditions and Health Care Plans

If your child has a diagnosed medical condition, a Health Care Plan needs to be completed (if we have not got one already). It is important that the school are aware of any medical conditions.

If there are any changes to a child’s existing medical condition and/or a new medical condition emerges, parents/carers need to complete a new Health Care Plan.

If we do not receive a new or updated Health Care Plan, your child will be unable to attend school.  If we do not receive medicine (as outlined in your child’s Health Care Plan), your child will be unable to attend school.

The Health Care Plans are available on the school website here.

Epi pens

If your child uses an epi-pen at school, please can you provide three epi-pens so that we can keep one in the lunch hall, classroom and welfare.

Asthma

The Harrow School Nursing Team advise if any child has been prescribed an inhaler for either asthma or viral induced wheeze, they should be reviewed annually. That can be done by either the GP, practice nurse or respiratory team. The school requires a copy of your child's latest Asthma Plan for their records.

If you require any further information, please contact Welfare on welfare@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk.

Inhalers

Please ensure that inhalers are kept in their original packaging with the child’s name and instructions.  We also require an age appropriate spacer together with the inhaler.

Inhalers for children in the Junior School

If your child uses an inhaler, please can you provide a third inhaler so that we have a spare one available.

Medication

If your child is prescribed medication which has to be administered at school, please complete a consent form which can be found on the school website with clear instructions.  It must come via the school office or alternatively, call Welfare tel: 0208 427 7222 Ext 2 and arrangements can be made to collect from outside the school office.

Any medical queries, please contact Mrs O’Rourke or Ms Goodspeed in Welfare.

Free check ups

Please be advised that children are entitled to:

  • Free NHS Prescriptions
  • Free NHS Dental Treatment
  • Free NHS Sight Tests

We do encourage families to have regular check-ups.  Please check https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk for further information.

Medical appointments during the day

And lastly a reminder about medical appointment.  If your child has a medical appointment during the school day, please remember to email attendance@vaughan.harrow.sch.uk with the details and with proof of the appointment.  Thank you.

HARROW FOODBANK

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy, receiving an unexpected bill on a low income, changes to benefits, not being eligible for benefits (for example due to immigration status) or delayed wages.  A simple box of food makes a big difference and the Harrow Foodbank can provide families with three days of nutritionally balanced food and support.

The Harrow Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Their belief is that they don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry.

Vaughan Primary School understands that at such times, some families may need emergency support or aid, therefore we are an agreed voucher referral partner and we are able to support families and provide them with emergency support.  Please contact Ms Keohane, Mrs Fink or Ms Perschky if you require the support of the school or the Foodbank.  We have assisted many parents to access this support and they have found the foodbank very supportive.  Please be reassured that there will be complete confidentiality in this matter.

What happens at a foodbank?

Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.

What is in a typical food parcel?

Food parcels can include:  Breakfast cereals, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, tinned beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, tea or coffee, sugar, biscuits and snacks.

Dietary requirements

The Foodbank can usually adapt your food parcel to meet your dietary needs, for example, gluten free, halal or vegetarian. When you arrive at the foodbank centre, a volunteer will chat to you about any special dietary requirements you may have.
